Craig Thurling has been elected as the new district councillor for The Rissingtons Ward, becoming the Liberal Democrats’ newest councillor on Cotswold District Council.

In a hard-fought campaign, Cllr Thurling secured 321 votes, defeating the Conservatives on 268 votes, with Reform UK close behind in third place. The Green Party finished fourth in the contest. The by-election was triggered following the resignation of the previous Green councillor on health grounds.

Speaking after his victory, Cllr Craig Thurling said:

“I’m thrilled to have been chosen by residents in The Rissingtons to be their district councillor. It’s a real honour to represent such a beautiful part of the Cotswolds and I want to thank everyone who put their trust in me.

“To those who supported other candidates, or didn’t vote at all, I want you to know that I will work hard for you and be a strong voice on the issues that matter most locally.

“My campaign focused on three clear priorities: tackling the cost of living, protecting local hospital services, and getting more road repairs. I’ll now use my position on the council to keep pushing on these issues and to stand up for residents whenever concerns are raised.”

The result was welcomed by Paul Hodgkinson, the Liberal Democrat prospective parliamentary candidate for North Cotswolds, who said:

“Craig will be a fantastic local councillor and I’m really looking forward to working with him. His result sends a very clear message about the direction of travel in the North Cotswolds. Voters are backing a hard-working Liberal Democrat team that is focused on local issues and delivering results for communities.

“As we head towards the next General Election, it’s increasingly clear that the real contest here will be between the Liberal Democrats and Reform UK. I would urge Green supporters and all progressive voters who are appalled at the prospect of a Reform government propped up by the Conservative party to unite behind me the Liberal Democrats so we can deliver the change our area and our country needs.”
